Skorne Theme Force

Theme Rules[edit]

Theme Force Restrictions[edit]

A The Exalted army can only include Skorne models from the following list:

Allowed models Which includes
Last updated 2017.04
Skorne warlocks Too many to bother listing.
Non-character warbeasts
Note: Character warbeasts can be taken, but only if bonded with their favourite warcaster (Cankerworm with Asphyxious, etc)
Too many to bother listing
Exalted models/units
Extoller models/units
Paingiver Beast Handler units
Void Spirit solos

Theme Force Bonuses[edit]

  • Can include one minion solo and one minion unit that work for Skorne.
  • For every 20 points of Exalted models or units get a free Command Attachment or Solo
  • All models with Soul Taker start with one soul.
  • Warbeasts get Death Rage. (Death Rage - When this model dies it can move a short distance and make one basic melee attack before being removed from play. The attack ignores crippled aspects and the move ignores free strikes.)

Thoughts on this Theme Force[edit]

The Exalted in a nutshell[edit]

The Exalted is an awesome-looking and extremely fluffy list made up of Skorne's ambulatory statues, staring down the board menacingly. With almost all your infantry being ARM 17 a lot of anti-infantry tech struggles against you, and with most of your army most of the time being SPD 6, with Vengeance, and the ability to turn incorporeal, you both hit pretty hard and get some tricksy movement abilities.

If you have any sort of MAT buff in your list enemies need to play extremely carefully around you to avoid assassinations; the threat range of an Immortal is 4" +3" (charging) + 3" (Vengeance) + 2" (Reach) + 2" (Ancestral Guardian buff) = 14". The threat range is non-linear and incorporeal models can charge through enemies, so this list brings an assassination threat.

With normally 30 Immortals on the table and an ARM high enough to resist anti-infantry tech it resembles Cryx's notorious Ghost Fleet in the "Did you bring enough to kill this army" stakes, and as most of your infantry are constructs there's even more tech that won't work against it.

On the other hand it struggles against both heavy DEF-skew (unless you have a way of fixing that) and heavy ARM-skew.

List Building Tips[edit]

A full unit of Immortals with an Advocate is 19 points - close but not quite there. You generally have to buy one Ancestral Guardian and get Hakaar and up to two Guardians for free.

A free soul on your Advocate is really useful especially to protect you from incoming shooting on turn one.

Death Rage is cute but little more; your warbeasts don't gain the benefit of Enrage. That said a bite or a drag from an Aradus Soldier can both be good.

It's relatively common in this list to use your warbeasts for support; a Basilisk Krea and a Cyclops Shaman are fairly common.

Casters of Note[edit]

Popular casters[edit]

  • Zaal, the Ancestral Advocate simply rocks this list. He looks like an Immortal (for that matter he is an Immortal) making the visual identity that much stronger. The Immortals are all ARM 22 on his feat turn (and the Guardians and Hakaar higher) and with his Aura of Power the assassination is always on the table. This list is a frequent triple-threat, able to bully the enemy on scenario.
  • Supreme Aptimus Zaal & Kovaas plays a much more offensive game. With frequently four Ancestral Guardians to Soul Converter to you get a lot of mileage out of his Soul Converter. And Last Stand Assassinations can be murderous. As can Last Stand in general - with the normal caveat you want two attacks out of the Immortals. Problem is that other casters bring similar buffs but don't kill their own troops. In general Zaal1 prefers cheap infantry for Last Stand ad Immortals aren't particularly cheap.
  • Supreme Archdomina Makeda has a feat for assassination with this army, can protect them all from incoming shooting, and can Stay Death to keep the unit attachments alive. Hakaar under Storm Rager shouldn't be underestimated. And finally Dash makes her Immortals completely immune to Free Strikes as they dash through the enemy.
  • Lord Tyrant Zaadesh is the main caster who doesn't go in all the way for this theme; he's mostly a beast-caster. But Immortals at MAT 8 and P+S 15 with Defensive Strike are impressively obnoxious, and that's enough added strength, especially with Hakaar being a Veteran Leader, to enable the Incorporeal Assassination.
  • Dominar Morghoul & Escorts is an interesting choice, with even more mobility for the Exalted, Stealth on one unit, and Night's Reflection as his de facto MAT buff. And the idea of acrobatic statues has an appeal.
  • Tyrant Xerxis makes the list hit harder and a bit tougher. He doesn't have any significant MAT buff so this list doesn't have the same assassination potential as the other options but between Stir the Blood and his feat it hits like a freight train, while Tactical Supremacy is an interesting choice for Immortals.
  • Dominar Rasheth can be surprisingly effective with acces to Incorporeal arcnodes, bringing ARM and DEF debuffs where needed. Immortals striking at MAT 11, P+S 17 are no joke.

Unpopular casters[edit]

  • Void Seer Mordikaar only has Paingiver Beast Handlers to hollow and is reduced to Essence Blasting his beasts as neither of these signature spells work on constructs.
  • Archdomina Makeda has a feat that only applies to living models.

Rules Clarifications[edit]

Rules Clarification: Theme Forces     (Edit)
Warning: This is a long one.

Mercenaries and Partisans
  • When you take a Partisan Mercenary, it counts as your Faction. However this doesn't increase the number of total mercenaries allowed. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Exception: If the Partisan Mercenary is explicitedly listed as one of the models you can take in the theme (such as Cephalyx in Cryx's Black Industries theme), then you can take the full FA plus your "up to one Merc" allotment. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Sometimes a specific Mercenary/Minion model/unit will gain a theme benefit of "If this model is included, it counts as a Faction model" (such as Greygore in Kriel Company). In this case, the model/unit might or might not count against your "up to one merc" limit:
    • If that Merc is in the list of models explicitly allowed (such as Savio in Storm Division), they won't count against your "up to one Merc" allowance.
    • If that Merc isn't in the list, (such as the Devil's Shadows in Slaughter Fleet Raiders), they will count against your "up to one Merc" allowance.
  • Partisans will count towards any relevant free points. For instance, Nyss will count twoards the "20 points of Retribution units" in the Defenders of Ios theme. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Partisans can be eligible to be taken as free choices. For instance, Erysis1 can be taken as a free solo in the Legion of Dawn theme. (Infernal Ruling)

Mercenaries and Ranking Officers

  • If you can include a Merc unit, and its attachments, then you can attach a Ranking Officer. This is true regardless whether or not that Ranking Officer is on the list of "Allowed models" . (Infernal Ruling)
  • Adding a Ranking Officer to a Merc unit doesn't increase the number of Merc units you can take.
  • The Merc unit will count towards your "X points of [Faction] models/units" benefit (if your theme is worded that way). (Infernal Ruling)

Mercenary Warjacks, Warbeasts, & Companions

  • As per the errata to the core rules, if your "up to one Merc" ...
    • ... can take warbeasts/warjacks, then you can add warbeast(s)/warjack(s) (without exceeding your "up to one" allowance)
    • ... comes with a Companion model, then you'll get that Companion (without exceeding your "up to one" allowance)

Bonus - One [X] gains [Y]

  • If you need to choose which models get your theme bonus, then you do this choice after deployment. (Infernal Ruling)
  • An example is how Winter Guard Kommand gives Advance Move to one-warjack-of-your-choice-per-WG-unit.
    • In comparison, Destruction Initiative gives all Servitors the Shield Guard ability so you don't need to "make" a choice.
  • You should still write on your army list how many of these bonuses you get to hand out, though, so your opponent can clearly see. (Infernal Ruling)
    • ie at the bottom of your list, you'd write "3 warjacks gain Advance Move" but you don't need to state which three are going to get the bonus.

Theme Forces, free models, and Specialists/ADR in Steamroller

  • You can swap out as many models from your main list into your specialists and vice versa as you like, but you must completely recalculate the new army list when you do, including bonuses. As long as the new army list is valid, including all free models, it doesn't matter what the left over points in your specialists are. (Staff Ruling)
  • If your theme only allows one merc solo, you can't have one in your main list and a different one in your specialists.

Unit Attachments & free points

Theme - The Bones of Orboros

  • Una1 cannot be taken in this theme (yet) due to the conflict between the theme's "Only Construct warbeasts allowed" and Una1's "Must take warbeasts with flight". There are no construct warbeasts with flight (yet). But if/when there is, then Una1 can be taken in this theme. (Infernal Ruling)

Theme - Call of the Wild

  • When it comes to other things that alter COST (such as Lamentation), follow basic maths: Double/halve first, then add/subtract.
  • Due to the way Tanith's feat is worded, during her feat turn the COST of animi cannot drop below 1. (Infernal Ruling)

Theme - The Faithful Masses

  • A Mercenary unit with an Attendant Priest does count as Protectorate unit for the purpose of calculating points for free cards. There is a bug in Warroom that prevents it counting properly. (Staff Ruling)

Theme - The Ghost Fleet

  • The "free solo" can be any kind of solo, it doesn't have to be a Revenant solo.

Theme - Kriel Company

  • Greygore/Dannon count against your "up to one Minion unit" allowance. (Infernal Ruling)

Theme - Llaelese Resistance

  • It is 2 Cruicible or 2 Cygnar or 2 Menoth.
You can't take more than 2, and you can't mix and match from multiple Factions. (Infernal Ruling)

Theme - Scourge of the Broken Coast

Theme - Slaughter Fleet Raiders

  • The Devil's Shadows Mutineers count against your "up to one Mercenary unit" allowance. (Infernal Ruling)

Theme - Clockwork Legions

  • If you attach a small-based model to a medium-based unit, it is no longer a medium-based unit and won't benefit from Vengeance.
  • However, it will regain Vengeance when the small base dies. Furthermore, the small base dying will trigger Vengeance.
  • (Infernal Ruling)
