Khador Iron Fang Character Unit

Kapitan Joreslev Volkov, Lieutenant Moskor Kolsk and Sergeant Kartov Yarovich are heroes of the Iron Fangs, survivors of a company which became legend. In the last fifteen years they fought in every major Khador battle, always serving the Empire where the fight gets brutal and the morale is falling. They are an icon for the Khadoran people. They embody the willpower and resilience which lie within every son of the Motherland.

  • Great Axe - 2" reach, P+S 11 melee weapon.

Special Abilities[edit]

  • Volkov only: Officer - This model is the unit commander even if the unit has a Leader model.
  • Tough - When this model is disabled, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, remove 1 damage point from this model; it is no longer disabled and becomes knocked down. While knocked down this model loses Tough.
  • Flank [Another model in this unit] - This model gains +2 to hit and +d6 damage for melee attacks vs enemy models in the melee range of another Great Bear.
  • Rapid Strike - This model has an additional melee attack each activation.
  • Relentless Charge - This model gains Pathfinder while it is charging.
  • Wall of Steel - This model gains +2 ARM bonus while it is B2B with another model in its unit.

Thoughts on Great Bears of the Gallowswood[edit]

Great Bears of the Gallowswood in a nutshell[edit]

The Great Bears are melee heavy hitters, MAT 10 with Flank and effective Weapon Masters

Combos & Synergies[edit]

  • The Iron Fang Kovnik gives them Steady with No Sleeping on the Job. He also grants Precise Strike to them while they are within wis CMD of 10" letting you choose the column they damage. This makes it so if they fail to kill a heavy they can at least cripple the important systems making retaliation that much harder.
  • Uhlan Kovnik Markov's Tactician affects them allowing you to move them through each other and all Iron Fang Models within CMD 10" or Markov.
  • In the Legion of Steel Theme the entire unit gains counter charge. Be careful what you use them on however; a single Great Bear won't do that much damage on a counter charge, but if your opponent triggers multiple bears you can still benefit from Flank. In combination with Uhlan Kovnik Markov and an Iron Fang Kovnik you have the potential for huge meyham as you screen the Great Bears with Pikeman before the charge through your own models to deliver their counter charge.

Drawbacks & Downsides[edit]

  • Because they are Flank-dependent they need to stay bunched together if they are to break armour.
  • They aren't terribly tough, dying to boosted attacks.
  • Rapid Strike won't get charge bonuses.

Tricks & Tips[edit]

Screen them - then mug a heavy. They may not be as hard hitters as the Doom Reavers but aren't bad.

Rules Clarifications[edit]

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Flank      (Edit)

  • You can gain the Flank bonus vs knocked down/stationary models (refer to the latest Errata).
  • Melee range is measured from your front arc so you cannot trigger Flank on models in your back arc.
  • The target enemy doesn't need to be in the Flanker's LOS, just their melee range.
    • Most of the time if something is in your melee range then it is so close it's in your LOS too, and the difference is meaningless.
    • But if you have 2" reach and you're jammed up in B2B with a bunch of closely-spaced enemies, you'll find your LOS is blocked. In this case, you might be able to trigger Flank on an enemy model that is "hiding" behind that front row of jammers, even though you don't have LOS to it.
  • Flank is not tied to a specific weapon, so Mount attacks and Power Attacks can benefit as well.

Rules Clarification : Rapid Strike - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Relentless Charge      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Wall of Steel      (Edit)

  • If you're slammed or thrown into a model with Wall of Steel, you'll immediately benefit. So you'll get the ARM bonus vs the slam/throw damage, too!
  • It's not possible to be B2B with someone at the same time you move, so you can't gain Wall of Steel at the same time you enter a damaging template (such as Covering Fire).
    • No, you cannot move an infinitely small distance and thus travel in an arc. This is Warmachine, not calculus.
    • However, if you can move througha model, ignore the above.
