Silver Line Stormguard – Cygnar Storm Knight Unit

This unit can be fielded by combining a standard unit of Stormguard with the Silver Line Stormguard upgrade kit from the Privateer Press online store.

Base size
Silver Line Stormguard, like normal Stormguard are expensive for infantry, just under a point a model for a full unit. They also share a statline with normal Stormguard, just carrying slightly different weapons.

Weapons and Attacks

  • Thunder Halberd - Medium P+S.
    • Reach - This weapon has increased melee range.
    • Critical Knockdown - On a critical hit, the target is knocked down. Knocked down models have their DEF reduced and can't really do anything at all until they stand up.

Special Abilities

  • Combined Melee Attack - Models with CMA may combine their attacks into a single super-powered attack. You gain +1 to hit and damage for each model participating in the CMA.
  • Gunfighter - This model may make ranged attacks while in melee, but can only target models within its melee range while doing so. This model gains 0.5" melee range (if it doesn't already have a melee weapon).
  • Immunity: Electricity - This model does not suffer damage from Electricity-type effects.
  • Electromagnetic Discharge - After the unit's combat actions are compete, the leader can make a large AOE ranged attack with no POW and +1 RNG for each hit scored by models in this unit. Models under the template suffer additional damage from electric damage rolls. In a force with a lot of electrical attacks, it's quite handy. Just don't forget to keep track of how many models hit with their attacks!
  • Polarity Wall - While B2B with each other, models in this unit can't be targeted by charges from models in their front arcs.
  • Ranked Attack - This model is ignored by friendly models when drawing LOS.

Thoughts on the Silver Line Stormguard

The Silver Line Stormguard in a nutshell

Silver Line, with Ranked Attack are very clearly a screening/jamming unit. And there are three major things that kill jammers and a couple of minor ones. The big three are charging, AoE blast damage, and shooting. With spells, other AoEs, and trampling being smaller problems. Of the big three they are very resilient against charges and have enough armour to shrug off blast damage. In addition to this they have an ability that boosts the damage of a lot of Cygnaran models.

This combination means that although they have in-faction rivals with Ranked Attack (Stormguard, Precursor Knights + UA) they are considered the best. Horgenhold Forge Guard from mercs on the other hand can trash heavies without help and are therefore often preferred despite not quite doing the same job.

There are three things the Silver Line synergise with; anyone who wants to shoot through them, anyone who doesn't like being charged (which is everyone with damage boxes), anyone with electrical attacks, and any warcasters who can protect them from shooting.
  • Nemo1 both can protect them from shooting with Deflection and has a feat that does electrical damage to hard targets.
  • Nemo3 likes to increase electrical damage rolls still further - and his Lightning War theme list gives you discounted Stormguard, including Silver Line.
  • Other warcasters who can protect them from shooting include Stryker2 (Deflection), Haley2 (Deceleration), and Stryker1 (Blur, Feat)
  • Stormblade Captain - gives them Relentless Charge (i.e. Pathfinder) and lets other Storm units move through them (or them through other Storm units). He also has a lightning gun.
  • Dynamo loves the Electromagnetic Discharge with its multiple attacks, enabling it to do up to 8 extra damage to a single enemy. And hates being charged.
  • Thunderhead also does a lot of electrical damage and hates being charged.
  • The Storm Strider has its electrical attacks become things that can really upset heavies. Especially if the enemy hits it without trashing it. Also between the two of them they make electrical attacks near the Storm Strider absurd.
  • Stormsmith Stormcallers dislike getting into melee - and excel at spot removal to unjam the Silver Line, while also taking good advantage of the buffed damage. An excellent combination.
  • The Stormsmith Storm Tower really likes a screen (and with light artillery they block LoS to it), and likes the way they buff its damage. Also as they are immune to its electrical attacks, bouncing a shot off the back of a Silver Line to hit Gorman (or any other annoying but squishy solo) with lightning can be really effective.
  • The Hurricane has two lightning cannons - already powerful electrical damage, any damage buff is good.
  • Models that want to shoot through are normally non-advance deploying infantry. Normally Gun Mages, Long Gunners, or even the Black 13th.
  • Stormblades really don't like getting charged or shot. They also really like the extra electrical damage, especially if you've taken all the trimmings.
  • Anything else with solid electrical attacks, such as Storm Lances, Reliant or the Stormsmith Storm Tower works well with them.

Drawbacks and Downsides

  • Low DEF and an ARM that means that almost any infantry kills them if they hit.
  • A mediocre POW attack.
  • Easy to jam because it's one attack/model
  • They need to pair up, so often less coverage than expected
  • They die to shooting due to a low DEF and a mediocre ARM. (And shooting some of them can mean the rest can be charged; they hate snipers like Widowmakers)

Tricks and Tactics

  • You can advance, throw the discharge, and hope for a lucky scatter.
  • You've a solid charge with these guys even if not an outstanding one.
  • CMA is seldom the right choice unless in melee with a heavy. But seldom isn't never, especially if they are lucky enough to hit an enemy caster.
  • You need to order them from the Privateer Press Online store.

Conversion Notes

If you want to upgrade regular Stormguard to Silver Line the difference is that the leader carries a halberd rather than whatever the heck the basic Stormguard leader weapon is, and there's a backpack on each model. Bell of Lost Souls has pictures of all the parts and a closeup of the leader halberd and a couple of backpacks. To convert on the cheap (or because you don't want to contact the PP online store because you don't live in America), replace the leader's weapon with a halberd (and preferably some electrical theming) and for preference add something electrical looking to each of their backs.
