Minions in HORDES

Minions are to HORDES what Mercenaries are to WARMACHINE. You can either include minions as part of your Hordes army, or you can build an army consisting entirely of minions. Many of the available minions will work for select factions both for HORDES and WARMACHINE. To see if a given model or unit is available to the faction of your choice, see below.

Minion Armies

Minions are slightly more complex than other factions, but only slightly. There are two different ways of building up an all-minion army.

Theme Forces
Just like all other warlocks, Minion warlocks have theme forces. Theme forces are a list of models and units designed to work with that warlock both in the backstory and (hopefully) on the tabletop. The theme force description gives a list of models/units you are allowed to bring with that warlock. If you only bring things on that list, you have achieved Tier 1, and you get a small bonus. Higher tiers come with additional restrictions, but bring further benefits as well. To meet the requirements for a Tier 4 list, you have to conform to four different restrictions, but you get four stacked bonuses as a reward.

Tier lists are usually best for small, one-warlock matches. You cannot claim tier bonuses in a game where each player runs more than one warlock.

Minion Pacts
Minion Pacts work kind of like tier lists, but they aren't warlock specific. Rather, they represent thematic forces from smaller interests within the really wild parts of Immoren. Unlike Mercenary Contracts, Minion Pacts are (thus far) mutually exclusive; no model appears in more than one Pact. A Pact will give you a bonus similar to a tier bonus; however, unlike tier bonuses, you can get one even when you have multiple warlocks. This gives you a slight edge over a Faction army, who can't claim any such bonuses after they bring in a second warlock.

Pact armies work best in medium games where each player brings more than one warlock. However, theme forces are generally better for small games unless you really, really want to break the tier requirements. Thus far there are two minion pacts in HORDES, described below:

The Blindwater Congregation

Main page: Blindwater Congregation
Newbie Guide: Learning Snappily

They come from Immoren's swampy wetlands, led by a conniving and crafty Gatorman by the name of Bloody Barnabas. He is an ancient and ruthless warlock who has subjugated or in some cases outright murdered his rivals, then raised them from the dead to serve him in their un-death. Made up of numerous marshland warbeasts and backed up by units of powerfully built Gatormen Posse, the Blindwater Congregation's ever-growing list of warlocks have plenty of tools to use. They also have access to other subservient races such as units of Bogtrogs and unique solos like the Croak Hunter and Gatorman Witch Doctor. This sub-pact of the Minions Faction now has access to a very popular and versatile battle engine, the Sacral Vault.

You will note that the Blindwater Congregation does have a limited model selection; however, that does not hinder their mix of subtlety and brute force play style. The pact's tier lists are also solid, great for pickup games and even in completive tournament play. Though the learning curve for this Minions sub-pact is harder to pick up than the more mature core Hordes' factions such as Legion of Everblight or Trollbloods, you will find learning the complexities within rewarding and worthwhile. Lastly as a player of the Blindwater Congregation, you will have to try things that are out-of-the-box, but also gain a solid game play foundation usable in any situation.

The Blindwater Congregation can take any Amphibious minion and a variety of support solos. A Blindwater list gets +1 FA to non-character Gatormen and the ability to place two 3"-wide shallow ponds within 20" of their deployment edge.

The Thornfall Alliance

Main page: Thornfall Alliance

Led by the Bringer of Most Massive Destruction, Lord Carver, Esq. III, a mighty and ruthless Farrow warlock, the Thornfall Alliance is composed of an ever-growing collection of Farrow tribes that have bent a knee to him. Farrow are a tribal based anthropomorphic porcine species bent on banditry and raiding, all while testing each other's strength for regional dominance. The Thornfall Alliance; aided by the human proto-scientist Dr. Arkadius who developed giant warbeasts from Farrow stock has allowed Lord Carver a means to organize these tribes into a force to be reckoned with. With access to ponderous, but highly modified warbeasts and assorted Farrow units using scavenged weapons and armor, the Farrow have taken their banditry and raiding to new levels, striking quickly and with purpose. This has attracted many solos such as Alten Ashley, Monster Hunter and Efaarit Scouts to their service. As the Thornfall Alliance's wealth has increased, so has its resources, recently producing the Meat Thresher, a fearsome battle engine.

With limited unit types and a small number of warbeasts, the pact can be destructive when properly applied. As with the other Minions sub-pact, out-of-the-box solutions are necessary, but with this, you will also gain a solid foundation with the Hordes rule set. The tier lists are of limited value in tournament play, but can be very exciting to run in pickup games. The list of solos and warbeasts can be used to great tactical value on the tabletop. The pacts default benefit of Advance Deployment for Farrow units can greatly aid this army in gaining an early foothold on objectives and controlling zones. The enjoyment of running the Thornfall Alliance is rewarding and often you will surprise your opponent in the pacts tabletop endurance.

The Thornfall Alliance can take any Farrow minion plus various support solos. All Farrow units in a Thornfall list get Advance Deployment and +1 FA.

Using Minions in other armies

Minions are most commonly fielded as parts of other armies, and below is a list of which models and units are available to the various Hordes factions. Minion units and solos can be included freely, within the normal field allowance (FA) restrictions. Minion warlocks can only be included in games that allow the use of two or more warlocks. Minion warbeasts can only be controlled by minion warlocks and minion lesser warlocks.

Note that minion warcasters and minion jack marshals can also use mercenary warjacks.
